Artist #4

Camera Obscura
Panoramic view of santa monica

This is more than just an art piece and more of just an innovation in technology or at least it was an innovation. This is my fourth artist piece. The camera obscura is an optical device that projects an image of its surroundings on a screen. It is used in drawing and for entertainment. It was this invention that led to photography. The device consists of a box or room with a hole in one side. Light from an external scene passes through the hole and strikes a surface inside where it is reproduced, upside-down, but with color and perspective preserved. The image can be produced onto paper, and then be traced to produce a highly accurate representation. The art that you could create with this instrument is crazy. Especially in the hand drawn art community. I would only imagine you would have to work fast since it is all happening in real time.
