Artist #16

Maya Lin
Peace Chapel

The Peace Chapel is an environmental landscape site designed by Maya Lin. It is a 14-acre site near Junita College campus. Designed and constructed in 1988-1989, the peace chapel consists of two sites. The larger site is defined by a 40-foot circle of rough granite stones that line a shallow well at top of a hill. This peace seems exactly what the title of the piece it looks extremely peaceful. A place to be yourself, a place to just sit and relax and think. You can see in the picture Maya Lin is sitting in the circle of the Peace Chapel she is sitting in an indian style seating position. She looks peaceful and calm.

Happening Art Piece

This is my Art project for module 4. It is a tribute to Alan Kaprows Fluids. I decided to do a miniature version of Fluids because after watching video within Glenn's class it inspired me in more ways than one. At first watching the video was boring and had me wondering what's the point of watching ice melt? But as Glenn kept talking about fluids it came to me that it's not just the ice melting it's how it's melting. It came to me as a metaphor for life. We start as an ice cube in life but slowly melt away, an ice cube is fairly strong in structure but slowly melts making itself vulnerable to breaking. As teenagers are bones are strong and healthy but as we get older we become more and more vulnerable to breaking bones. Setting up the ice was fairly hard as it wasn't complete blocks but once I got some stack most stayed up. As it continued to melt the ice took a form of it's own some connecting with the ice that was stacked upon it. It took the ice over 5 hours to melt but was well worth the wait.

Artist #15

Robert Smithson
Spiral Jetty

Spiral Jetty by Robert Smithson is my 15th artist research piece. The Spiral Jetty is land art that was created in Utah and made entirely of mud, salt crystals, basalt rocks, earth, and water. It took six days to construct and is walkable as in you can walk on it, when it is in sight. Water does rise and lower annually. In 2008 the Spiral Jetty was in trouble due to oil companies wanting to drill for black gold (oil) I'm not sure if it ever came to pass but I highly doubt it. The piece is describe as being a representation of Smithsons marriage with his with Nancy Holy. He said like a spiral his marriage was going nowhere. I think it is one of those things that is important to America as a whole especially as natural art. To have it destroyed or disrupted by anything other than something natural is just horrible

Artist #14

Hussein Chalayan
Afterwords

for my 14th artist research I am using Hussein Chalayan's Afterwords dress as my inspiration. In this piece the dress serves well as a dress but also as a table. I can only imagine that the dress must A. be uncomfortably heavy and B. only used for sight. I can't anyone wearing this in day to day life. Although it is rather cool. To be a table it must be very hard to move your legs. While searching I couldn't find out what the dress was made of, made it is made of light weight material like plastic so it won't weigh so much. None the less it is a very innovative great looking dress.

Artist #13

Andy Goldsworthy
Roof

Andy Goldsworthy is my13th artist research piece. The piece that I am reviewing is Roof at first sight looks to be a room filled with rocks that are stacked in a uniform manner so that they escalate to create sort of half a circle. Most of Andy's work is not meant to be permanent art pieces due to the fact that he usually deals with earth art. This is also earth art but is handle in a totally different matter as in it is indoors. Andy used a team of workers to help sculpt the piece, it took nine weeks to build. The concept for the sculpture came from the artist's interest in the origin of Washington building stones. It is currently held at the National Gallery of Art. I personally like it. I remember tiling my bathroom and imagine this must be something like that except doing with sculpture would be to the 20th level of some sort.

FarmLab

When I first heard that there was actually a Farm in Los Angeles I shouted that it couldn't be real but low and behold it is. Farm Lab is an urban art museum made up of natural artwork created by plants. When it's founder Lauren Bon took over Farmlab she set out to save plants and life in Los Angeles.

In this picture of Another city is Possible there is no clear meaning on what it means, one can only take there own interpretation of what it means. I believe it means that another city is possible like we can create such a city that has more plant life more natural items. Los Angeles is so urban I doubt most of the civilians of Los Angeles even know of Farm Lab existence. The sign is basically saying to me that who says Los Angeles can't be like other cities that are known for their vivacious plant life. We all have the power to change it.

In this neon sign inside of Farmlab I got from this the same meaning as the first photo. We need to create more, so much we do in our daily lives is destroy plant life and other living things. We destroy trees we don't recycle. There's so many things we can do to limit our footprints on this planet while we inhabit it we take advantage of it. Not to say for every paper we use we need to plant a tree, but we need to realize the huge impact we have had on the earths existence up to this point.

Some pieces I really didn't get or really understand. I'm guess they wanted to appeal to people more. The planting in the car struck me as an odd thing to do. It just felt unnecessary, the car could of been used to make new things that the earth could use. Instead it is used as an art piece, I'm guessing its just a double edge sword when it comes to stuff like this though. I just think first off it should be about the environment and then a museum. All in all I thought Farmlab was really cool.

Artist #12

Yoko Ono
Painting to Hammer a nail

For my twelfth artist research piece I am presenting Yoko Ono's Painting to Hammer a Nail. Yoko Ono I think more famously known for the driving force of what everyone believes ended The Beatles is also an artist. Simple in it's design the painting to hammer a nail is still a good piece. The piece is a hammer connected by chain to a woodblock that has nails throughout it. The piece showcases that why not hammer a hammer in. Funny to think because the nails are used to hold the hammer up in place on the woodblock. i'm just curious to why is it named "To Paint a hammer to a woodblock" as in where does the painting aspect occur?

Artist #11

Burning Man Group

For my eleventh artist piece I am reviewing The burning man group. The Burning man is more of a celebration in life than an performance art although it can also be shown as art. In burning man people gather at a predetermined place to showcase art work of a determined theme. Sometimes life, sometimes death. Whatever the theme every artist brings a piece of art with them to celebrate.

Artist #10

Donatella Versace
"Jungle" Dress

In this artist piece I am reviewing Donatella Versace's famous "Jungle Dress" that was famously worn by Jennifer Lopez at the Grammy awards. The dress is describe as a jungle green/sea green dress it is made of silk chiffon and has a very low V shaped neck line. The dress in my opinion is beautiful and I think the dress would not have had the legacy it has had without the woman who first premiered it to the masses, Jennifer Lopez. The dress gives the viewer especially a male one a lot to think/feel. It's a very sexual looking dress but is also a work of art in the sense of fashion.

Artist #9

Stelarc
Third Hand

In this piece or should I say scientific work the artist builds a three arm one made to the exact dimensions of his right and made to fit as an extension. It was able to pinch, grasp, and turn the wrist like a hand can. It was used throughout most of his performances but  due to the weight and gel used to handle the arm it made his real arm  irritated and to heavy for everyday use. so now its only used as a performance piece.
I think this piece is crazy and very good. To build that and see something like that. Its like looking into the future especially since this was done in the 1980's. unfortunately it was heavy and couldnt be used everyday but it sure was a giant stepping stone.

Artist #8

Marina Abramovic
Rhythm 0

Rhythm 0 is probably one of my favorite performance art pieces ever. In my eighth artist piece for Marina Abramovic I can say that I have grown new respect for women and her in general. I don't know if I could be as strong or as comfortable with my body as she is. For those who doesn't know Rhythm 0 Marina surrounded by artist in her time period who all used their bodies for performance art as violent pieces she wanted to do something different instead of doing her own art work she let the audience create the artwork for her. She laid on a table and allowed the audience to do whatever they wished to her. She had a table laid out with items such as tape, a knife, a gun, a feather, a bullet, a whip, etc. The audience was allowed to do whatever they wished to her. Some did nothing some did a lot, but by the end of the performance she was bleeding and was naked. As she began walking towards the audience they all ran. I'm not sure if they were ashamed or just afraid but they ran. By the end of the night Marina looked into the mirror and had a long gray hair. Obviously she was under a lot of stress during the performance. This piece shows how concentrated and how dedicated she is. It shows how far a person can go without limits and with time to actually do it. We as a society like to push ourselves to the limit with everything we do. Rhythm 0 is a prime example of this.

Artist #7

Kevin Bracken
Pillow Fight NYC 2011

This piece by Kevin Bracken is my seventh artist piece. This is his massive gigantic pillow fight that he produced in New York City at Union Square. Like most of his events they are meant to be fun crazy event where people can let loose and just enjoy there selves. The pillowcase in this instance is a crazy loved filled event that is exactly what it says it is. A giant pillow fight. People all brought a pillow and themselves and came ready for a fight, a pillow fight. Given the fact that the 10year anniversary of 9/11 is this year the pillow fight is a much needed break for the already tragedy stricken city.

Artist #6

Improv Everywhere
Gotta Share the Musical

In my sixth art piece Improv Everywhere does Gotta Share! The Musical an ode to social media technology. They talk about every platform available to users to share website and apps such as youtube, twitter, facebook, vimeo, dig, tumblr, etc they all make an appearance in the song for improv everywhere. I personally feel that Improv Everywhere are a great group but that they are hiding what they are witch is a flash mob. I don't think most of there work has a message of any sort and is just used for shock value. Gotta Share is a prime example yes we are all obsessed with our daily media life but it in no way deserves to have a song written about it and sung to us as a group. I did like it and thought it was funny but not meaningful.

Artist #5

Survival Research Laboratories
Little Arm

This piece is called little arm and is my fifth artist piece. What I always find interesting about SRL pieces are that they show a not to distant future where there objects might not be to far fetched to believe. Like we might actually need some of there technology to fight and survive. In any case Little Arm is a small arm about 12 ft. long in length placed on a screw machine. It can be controlled remotely by a human via  an arm controller. It is gesture based. It takes 2 gallons of gasoline to operate. This reminds me of Stellarc's third arm but on a machine. I wonder how accurate this can actually be.

Artist #4

Camera Obscura
Panoramic view of santa monica

This is more than just an art piece and more of just an innovation in technology or at least it was an innovation. This is my fourth artist piece. The camera obscura is an optical device that projects an image of its surroundings on a screen. It is used in drawing and for entertainment. It was this invention that led to photography. The device consists of a box or room with a hole in one side. Light from an external scene passes through the hole and strikes a surface inside where it is reproduced, upside-down, but with color and perspective preserved. The image can be produced onto paper, and then be traced to produce a highly accurate representation. The art that you could create with this instrument is crazy. Especially in the hand drawn art community. I would only imagine you would have to work fast since it is all happening in real time.

Artist #3

Velaslavasay Panorama
UnKnown

My third artist research piece is by the Velasalavasay Panorama it doesn't have a name as far as I know but what I did find about it was the viewer called it two chairs sitting under a gazebo surrounded by carnivorous plants. Carnivorous would be the key word in this piece as to say it means plants that receive most but not all of its energy from trapping and consuming animals, insects, and other arthropods. Just the thought of it is a little creepy. Makes me think of the movie Little Shop of Horrors. What I think of this is usually when you go out on dates with a male or female you are usually putting yourself out there fully to see if the male or female likes you. It can be an awful experience  almost like eating lunch always on edge. I think this would be like just sitting around the garden around all of those plants. You sit there just hoping nothing happens.

Artist #2

David Wilson
The Decaying Dice of Ricky Jay

The second piece in my artist research list is David Wilson he is the founder of Museum of Jurassic Technology. The piece that I am reviewing today is The Decaying Dice of Ricky Jay. With this piece I doubt that there is a giant meaning behind it. Unless it is a personal one from the artist like maybe a friend who a constant gambler and his dice are just decaying as the years go by. The cool thing about the piece is how the dice appear to be decaying. I wonder if this is an effect like did the artist place stuff on the dice to get the effect, did he dip the dice into something to get the look, or do dice just decay? I'll never be able to answer the question but it is an interesting piece none the least.

Artist #1

Lauren Bon
Displace

This is my first artist of this module her name is Lauren Bon and the piece that I am reviewing today is Displace. Displace is a weird but extremely powerful piece. Were shown a medium sized living room that looks to be in gray-scale. Right in the center of it is a long what might be a table with lawn grass on top. The lawn grass is in full color giving the living room the only color of this artist piece.
In most cases but not this one I really feel you should know the artist to see where they are coming from with there work as a whole. Lauren Bon does a lot of work with plant life. You can tell that she feels very strong about the environment. In this piece it is evident how she feels. The lawn in the living room especially such a green/healthy one is uncommon and just unnatural to have inside a living room. I think the artist is trying to get use to think about are own actions in the green community, like water plants, trees, keeping flowers. Making it more natural to see stuff like this.

Artist Presentation

Ana Mendieta
November 18 1948- September 8 1985

Ana was a Cuban-American artist known for doing performance art, photographic art, and video work.
Born in Havana,Cuba but moved to the United States at a young age. In 1961, at the age of 13, she and her older sister were exiled from Cuba because her family opposed the tropical dictatorship. She was placed in several different foster care institutions throughout Iowa. She earned a BA from the University of Iowa in 1969 and earned an MA in Painting while also earning an MFA from the School of Art History in Intermedia. She created her work in different locations throughout the world for example Cuba, Mexico, Italy, and in the United States.
Ana's work is considered to be strongly feminist by some. Her earlier art work leaned more towards violence against the female body. Later on in her career she focused on a spiritual and physical connection with land. Ana would die on September 8, 1985 at the age of 36 from a fall from a 34th floor apartment in Greenwich Village. 8 months earlier she had married the minimalist sculptor Carl Andre. Andre was tried and acquitted of her murder. Her death is describe as a possible accident or a suicide. In the absence of any witness to her death, other than (possibly) her husband Carl Andre, the exact cause of her death may never be known.

Artist #11

Knowbotic Research
My Black Cat
In this piece by Knowbotic I am reviewing My Black Cat. 30 black balloons filled with helium hover freely in space(of the room). They are moved subtle by the osculating fan in the room. Audience is free to play with the 30 balloons in the room but on the back wall the words "Super_Extras Don't Move!" When the balloons are moved they have an audio system attached to them that creates them to say a variety of sound bites.
 My black cat is black
My black cat is rebellious
My black cat is not easy to control
My black cat is not a variable
My black cat is undefinable
My black cat is irregular
My black cat is illegal
My black cat is never changing
My black cat is inflexible
My black cat is stubborn
When the audience comes in to the piece I think they are put at ease. They can touch the blackcats(Balloons) the viewers can be creative and be playful. But with closer observation you can see not all things are not what they seem. A net is mounted at the ceiling to keep the helium filled balloons from flowing away, The words on the back wall discourage you from touching anything, and the sounds the balloons make as they are moved. So it is open but also very restricted. Just like media we have today in the word open but always censored.

Artist #10

Joseph DeLappe

Dead in Iraq

Dead in Iraq is a series of protest art. Joseph logs on to a game that is used to help/recruit for United States Army or Marines. Joseph posts the death of real men and women who have given their lives for the war effort. What's not known is if he is for the effort or against it. Is he trying to change young men and women's mind about joining or is he just showing respect.
I like the art itself very powerful. Players of the game have no idea if it is real or fake. Are the post actually the names of former living army personnel. I guess not knowing is the creepiest part about the whole thing. So kudos to Joseph Delappe for thinking of it.
